5 minutes with… Spinlet

SchwartzmanIn our 5 minutes with profiles, MEF members talk about their business, their aspirations for the future and the wider mobile industry. This week CEO and MEF Africa Steering Committee member Neil Schwartzman introduces Spinlet.

What does Spinlet do?

Spinlet is Africa’s premier digital music distribution service. The free Spinlet app allows artist’s to monetize and digitally distribute their music in over 180+ countries. Spinlet also provides music lovers, worldwide access to thousands and thousands of African and international songs on their Blackberry, Android, Nokia Asha – and soon to be released on IOS and Windows 8 handsets; along with tablets and desktop integration.

When did Spinlet launch and what growth have you seen?

Spinlet officially launched in 2011, and in less than 2 years we’ve reached a milestone of 500,000+ registered users.  To date, Spinlet has signed hundreds of Pan African artist’s to our non-exclusive platform, and we’ve built a multi-genre library of thousands and thousands of African songs.

Since our launch in 2011, our staff has grown to over 65 and Spinlet has expanded our offices to Lagos, Nigeria; San Francisco, California and Cape Town, South Africa; and we have an on-ground presence in both Kenya and Ghana.

What are your main goals?

Spinlet’s goal is to help Africans digitally distribute their content globally. In addition, Spinlet is satisfying worldwide music lovers with a compelling music and social networking experience.

Spinlet has also created a positive, on-going relationship with artists, by helping them capture revenue streams that are often lost to the piracy market, and providing global metrics on where and when their music is being streamed and downloaded.

Where do you see Spinlet in three years’ time?

In 3 years, Spinlet will dominate the African media and entertainment space by offering cutting edge cloud technology, social media interaction and engagement; and we’ll expand our global digital distribution, by providing television, film and video distribution.

Spinlet will remain true to our slogan – Move With It! – by creating an exceptional Cloud based user experience. Spinlet will provide consumers with the most versatile and technically savvy ways of consuming music, video and film on their mobile and desktop devices.

What aspect of mobile is most exciting to you right now?

Spinlet is very excited about the development of digital and broadband technology in Africa; and how companies like Huwaei, Tecno, Qualcomm and Samsung are bringing cheaper Smartphones to the African masses. As the cost of smartphones decline across Africa, and the last mile of broadband connectivity takes place, more Africans will have smartphones and access to the Internet; and we’re excited about improving their lifestyle by providing them access to the best content African has to offer.

What’s the most critical issue that will hit mobile within the next 12 months?

Distribution of content will remain key over the next 12 months. Spinlet will continue to focus on democratizing the sale of content across Africa, the Diaspora and the Global markets. In addition, as the cost of cheaper smartphone handsets enter the African market, and better and cheaper broadband tariffs are offered to consumers – the large youth population will create significant demand for Spinlet content across Africa and the Diaspora.

Apart from your own, which mobile companies are the ones to watch in the year ahead?

Spinlet is focused on developing the best possible user experience for our app. Technology is always evolving, and Spinlet is keen to partner with any company that can assist in enhancing our user experience.  We’re looking at social media companies like 2Go, Mixit, Eskimi, etc. to leverage off the large youth population; and technology companies like Gracenote to provide better metadata; and music discovery technology like Shazaam.

We’ll continue to partner with content owners (television, film and music), tech companies and social media networks to enhance and create the ultimate Spinlet the use experience.
