MEF Global Forum 2013. Inside out. Outside in.

rimma-newRimma Perelmuter, MEF’s CEO, looks ahead to the inaugural MEF Global Forum 2013 in November and shares insights on the industry’s shifting dynamics and how the international gathering will look to advance global innovation, growth and monetisation in mobile.

The mobile industry continues to grow and morph at lightning speed.  Platforms, services and business models are constantly evolving and in parallel new industry sectors such as banks and publishers are embracing mobile as the primary touch-point for their customers; all eager to leverage the mobile platform for discovery, engagement and transactions.

At the same time, consolidation and shifting power dynamics continue to challenge the traditional mobile landscape with growth and innovation no longer confined to telco / OEM / platform triangulation nor to so called ‘developed markets’.  In the last year, having visited countries as diverse as India, South Africa, Qatar and Mexico, it is clear that technology hubs and growth opportunities emanate equally from growth markets. At the same time, the world still looks to Silicon Valley to learn from and partner with the best innovators and investors.

In recognition of this ever evolving landscape and the desire to help our members benefit from the latest innovation and grow globally, earlier in the year we took the decision to launch a new event: MEF Global Forum. Following on from the highly successful MEF Americas which for three years brought together the North and Latin America markets, our new event ups the ante and offers players from all regions the opportunity to congregate at a global level in San Francisco on 14th and 15th November.

We are very excited about the event as a natural and essential transition for MEF as an organisation to connect Silicon Valley and the world at large, to learn about the latest trends and innovation, gather practical knowledge and advance business partnerships.

Much attention has been given to the tech cluster and innovations coming from the Valley. And it is indeed a key driver of today’s mobile industry. Reflecting the changing landscape MEF Global Forum will host speakers from Telefonica, Deutsche Telecom and Singtel Innov8 who have all set up investment arms in the Bay Area whilst keynotes from the CEOs of Evernote and Shazam will capture the growth narrative of developers who’ve made it big!

Offering an ‘inside-out, outside-in’ perspective our aim is to deliver a unique experience that will give attendees a global view of the diverse mobile industry. Our world becomes ever smaller, but challenges and barriers remain and there is so much to be gained from showcasing local successes and sharing knowledge across different regions.

Bay BridgeWelcome networking drinks will be hosted at Mozilla’s roof terrace (overlooking the Bay Bridge) and the Innovation Day (14th November) is supported by Silicon Valley Bank and located at nestGSV, a global-network of innovation centres in Redwood City, will give an inside-out view looking at the hottest trends in mobile content and commerce coming out of the Valley.

The MEF team has also engaged the Valley’s top universities, Berkley and Stanford, and local VCs to bring the latest thought leadership and newest start-ups to the international audience.  We’re particularly delighted that Brazilian entrepreneurship academic Dr Jean Paul Jacob from Berkeley University will be part of the speaker line-up.

The Global Growth and Monetisation Day (15th November) takes place at the InterContinental San Francisco and will look outside-in, showcasing international business from both established and growth markets with an emphasis on how to create the right partnerships and grow globally.  The agenda will also include regional workshops offering practical advice and networking for doing business in Africa, Middle East and LATAM.

To showcase global opportunities, the event also reinforces that there is more than one Silicon Valley with a line-up of international speakers including African mobile money pioneer and Meffys Special Recognition Award winner Hannes van Rensburg from VISA Mobile.

Importantly we’ve taken the bold decision to combine the coveted Meffys Awards with MEF Global Forum, which we have moved from its London origins to San Francisco.  Celebrating their 10th anniversary the Meffys are the international benchmark for measuring success and rewarding innovation in mobile content and commerce and will attract attendees from across the world giving them access to the mobile companies that are at the very top of their game and an opportunity to meet and network with top level press from the Valley and beyond.  We’ve also just extended the deadline for the Meffys to the 23rd of September – so get your entries in quick!

We are very much looking forward to welcoming you to Silicon Valley in the Fall to inaugurate the MEF Global Forum and celebrate the diversity of our mobile industry with a decade of the Meffys.  The event promises to be a truly international business platform, accelerating mobile growth and innovation and bringing together the global mobile community.

We’re excited to build this as an industry-led event and grateful for the leadership of the event’s founders and supporters including: Kaspersky, Playphone, Mozilla, Mooreland Partners, Binbit, Silicon Valley Bank and Vserv.  Opportunities for sponsorships for MEF Global Forum 2013 and Meffys 2013 are still available – If you want to showcase your brand to an international and influential audience please contact events@mefmobile.org
